Wow, that is very cool. You have a very accurate frequency controlled phase actuator. Simply place a very strong Permanent Magnet in place of the compass and you can move stuff to exactly where you want using the correct frequency. Neat!

@UniversalExpanse yes motor action was what i was getting at, unfortunately i have no idea what frequency would be required, the pancake coil at some frequency maybe exhibiting this kind of action , probably via harmonic frequencies, very high frequency?, be interesting to see if a radio could pick it up.
sorry if this is a bit vague, i was hoping someone could point out the workings of this effect, myself.

@dasraiser ah i gotcha, it sounds similar to motor action when on one half of the loop is being attracted and on the otherside of the armature the same loop is being repelled by the opposite field pole, i know what your saying is different but is it similar principle?. If i have the wrong idea give me a rough idea what frequency would be needed, given you cant go too high because inductance doesnt like high frequencies unless its skin effects starts doing strange things.

@UniversalExpanse hmm i think you misunderstand me, if you have one single 360' loop of wire, you could have AC going into it and with the right frequency have both + and - on the wire at the same time, ie both north and south poles, and if that was detuned it would propagate around the wire.
-
would be nice to know more details about this experiment like what type of current ac or dc, waveform, amplitude, peak and ontime vs off time of pulse if any, the way the coil is wound, how many turns also is it bifilar wound and some more extras you can biff in as well plz. :)

@dasraiser 'positive and negative phases'?.........during a phase can only be negative or positive not both at the same time. even if what you claim is to be true, the magnetic field cycling in one direction would cancel the opposing field caused by the other phase in the opposite direction. bear in mind they would cancel because the magnetic field would be the same strength given the same current is flowing through both wires. In saying that i dont know how this coil actually works.

is this working like this, take a single loop of wire and get its resonant frequency (complete 360 phase on one turn, to say) , then de-tune it so the positive and negative phases propagate around the wire, giving both north and south poles that the compass is attracted to.

nice, i would love to see a flat sheet of ferro fluid showing the magnetic field on this.

camera tricks?, Whats causing this strange thing, could it be some kind of standing electromagnetic field?..............maybe a new magnetic field caused by a combination of reasonance and phaseshift?.... nice do tell me more about it !

Congrats, you invented brushless compass :)
This is no trick or rotating magnet underneath. Eveyone thinks they know so much, do some reasearch before posting jiberish.

what is it? please explain it better

Using a flat Tesla coil a small rotating magnetic field is present when a certain pulse frequency is applyed.
