Patrick Henry (May 29, 1736 -- June 6, 1799) was a prominent figure in the American Revolution. This more...speech was given March 23, 1775, at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia, and is credited with having singlehandedly convinced the Virginia House of Burgesses to pass a resolution delivering the Virginia troops to the Revolutionary War.


"It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace-- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear,or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I see people think that the government is the problem, but it is NOT. It is us, the people, the PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. We have not participate in any political hearings. I know that there is one American that knows the solution for our modern day crisis. I plead to AMERICANS, step up and participate in political hearings. If the colonist's had approached the most determined members of the British Methodist Church, then the Methodist's could have put real pressure on London to listen to colonial grievances. The speech is germane today, just replace references to England and King George III with today's Fed Gov who is destroying the Bill-of-Rights with the enactment of laws like the Patriot Act and the resent military appropriations bill. The Professional Military and National Guard Units are now being canvased to find out who among them will follow orders to disarm us and/or kill us. He warned in 1775 about England's chains of slavery, today the Fed Gov is forging new chains of slavery for us.
