Time lapse video of Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse on December 21, 2010 from 1:10 AM EST (6:10 GMT) to 5:03 AM EST (10:03 GMT) from Gainesville Florida. Music is Claude Debussy Nocturnes: Sirènes.
I appreciate the many notes of thanks and interest sent to me by email since I posted the video on December 21, 2010. I am responding to the many emails that I received requesting information on how the video was made.
I used a 4 inch telescope (Takahashi TSA-102 with TOA-35 field flattener) on an equatorial mount (Losmandy GM-8) that was polar aligned and following the Moon at a lunar tracking rate. Photographs were taken every 20 seconds with a dslr camera (Canon EOS-40D) using EOS Utility software at ISO 100 or ISO 200 in aperture priority mode with variable exposure compensation. Spot metering was used. The tracking was manually corrected every 20 to 30 minutes to keep the Moon centered in the field. Photos were assembled in Quicktime Pro software to make the time lapse video. A software program (Sony Vegas Pro 9) merged the video, music and text. The periodic large field shifts (jerky motion) in the video are due to the manual tracking corrections.

  • Beautiful, but can someone please explain why we first see the earth's black shadow only and only later the reddish color comes in. I remember we learned at school something like umbra and penumbra (full shadow, half shadow), but how does that tie in with color observed?

  • @oomblikkies Hi and thanks for comments. The reddish color is not usual at total eclipses.Usually is totally dark but this year there is a reflection from the sunlight in the air due to the ashes of volcanoes eruptions during this year. From wikip:Predictions suggested that the total eclipse may appear unusually orange or red, as a result of the eruption of Mount Merapi in Indonesia on October 26.

  • Very nice.

  • @oomblikkies In school i learned that color is due to the sunlight refraction on the atmosphere at dusk, all the world's evenings together are causing that reddish color on the moon.

  • Very symbolic of 2012 - RENEWAL
