http://bit.ly/storyofbroke — The United States isn't broke; we're the richest country on the planet and a country in which the richest among us are doing exceptionally well. But the truth is, our economy is broken, producing more pollution, greenhouse gasses and garbage than any other country. In these and so many other ways, it just isn't working. But rather than invest in something better, we continue to keep this 'dinosaur economy' on life support with hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money. The Story of Broke calls for a shift in government spending toward investments in clean, green solutions—renewable energy, safer chemicals and materials, zero waste and more—that can deliver jobs AND a healthier environment. It's time to rebuild the American Dream; but this time, let's build it better.

sad to see comments like "we cant do anything about it"... wait... what? if you really want it you will get yourself a knowledge how to grow your own food, you will settle your life in a less consuming way, maybe drive less in your car and think of how to get free electricity or whatever you need. you just have to get less depended on money - its the only thing that would destroy those evils

This is ridiculous... yeah, let's subsidize alternate chemicals (ethanol) and companies that research alternate resources (solyndra). Sounds like a top notch idea!

Hope that wool on your eyes feels nice!

well, in my opinion, nothing is wrong with striving for perfection. just realize it won't happen, but still try. b) we are a democracy (fine, republic), we are the government (well i can't vote, but). change is being fought for by almost everyone. but opposite changes, by fairly equal sides. thats democracy, unfortunately, buts its still the best option

Also, utopia is nothing more than a concept. It implies a level of perfection. For any society to thrive, it must realize that there is no perfection. It has to be able to change. Sadly, our government doesn't try to change anything, they instead do their best to keep everything the same. Any change that's happened in the last 100 years has been fought for by the people not the government.

constructive to do. If I wasn't limited by money I would have long ago finished my education and be out in the world contributing to it. Not for the money but for the reward of knowing that I contributed to society. Maybe that sort of thinking is not too common, but maybe it is.

I know I went on and on there. Kinda had to so as to get all that out. In response to your statement that money = incentive, was Copernicus interested in money? Was Tesla? These people contributed immensely to our scientific knowledge for the sake of the knowledge itself. If you yourself weren't limited by the amount of money you had, what would you do with yourself? Would you just hang out and watch TV? Maybe. But maybe after you got tired of doing nothing, you'd go out and find something
