Thanks for your comments. The biggest reason for the long start was the overhaul of the fuel pump and the pressure pipes. The pump was at a local diesel specialist who did a good job. The pipes which I did myself was loosened, cleaned with sand paper and solvent and repainted with silver and then refitted. I did prime the system before the first start but there must still have been some air. Now the engine starts very quickly. Neither glow plugs nor cold start device, just the CAV DPA pump.

We used to have a small haulage company in Lancashire and the first two artics we had were old Leyland Beavers with the 680 Power Pluss engine. Stripped them down a few times and they do take a bit of cranking to get them going, lovery sound, nice and crisp

680 engines do take a while to fire after the fuel system has been disturbed ( I know, I've done a few!) but after it's all primed, then usually a big boot full of throttle will get it going quite quickly.

i started up a 25 year old leyland olympian with a gardner 6lxb in feb started first time only thing was shuddering on cold but fine when warmed up

Or a sniff of easy start would do the job.

Or loss of compression , every diesels worst nightmare . If a Diesel engine loses compression it can take up to 2 minutes of steady cranking to start them , so be aware of diesels older than 7-8 years , they may have starting problems .

bet you went through a few batteries and starters doing that everyday!

I used to start leyland atlantean 600s in the early seventies and they took much longer than that !

May have been bad mainteance
