That became the mantra for this native New Yorker and publishing consultant who came to New Orleans as a volunteer with HANDS ON to help revitalize the city following hurricane Katrina.
Known simply as "D", donned a hazmat suit and began to gut, de-mold and renovate homes in some of the most devastated areas of the city. As part of the revitalization, he was asked to produce a mural for Central City Head Start. This mural was the birth of his "paint the change" showcase of some 400 murals, located throughout the city. He engaged a number of other volunteers to assist with the community project and everything has roller coasted from that effort.
"Working with the community on mural projects was a new experience for me, says D about his first project. "Seeing the children respond to the murals was very rewarding. Educators in the schools where some of the murals are located have noted that students are now requesting and checking out more books on the arts. I think that shows that art is a creative tool that also impact and influence."
D's art is inspired by and evokes the essence of a city he has adopted:
what was and what he hopes will be; and sometimes it includes little flights of fancy.
