The Awá-Guajá (sometimes spelt Awa Guaja by non-Brazilians) Indians routinely adopt animals from the forest.
In particular the Awá Guajá (Awa Guaja) tribe women nurse wild animals.

In this video, Kapanií, a native Indian woman who speaks Tupi, has adopted a monkey, who, she says, will grow up together with her son, until it becomes too big to manage. (Both her son and the monkey breast feed from her. )When it becomes too big to manage, or too aggressive, it will be released back into the wild.
