She convinces you like nobody else that there is a specific, beloved "du" to whom she is so profoundly grateful. As gorgeous as this instrument is, the poetic intelligence is yet more formidable: she is never singing on the music first, but the deepest import of the text. What more can we (what more could Strauss) ask?

I simply adore her.
Everything about her! I've noticed of late some pop singers are rather inappropriately referred to as Divas, singers who really know little about the actual mechanism of the voice and all it can do. Jessye Norman is a Diva in every sense of the word. She also has a wonderful sense of humour. She once had trouble getting in to her seat on a plane and the stewardess said to her : Perhaps if tried sideways.....
Jessye Norman replied : My dear, I have no sideways!"
