The motion: "Aid to Africa is doing more harm than good"
Moderator: Brian Lehrer
Speaking for the motion: George Ayittey, William Easterly and David Rieff
Speaking against the motion: C. Payne Lucas, John McArthur and Gayle Smith
IQ2US marks the launch of Oxford-style debating -- one motion, one moderator, three advocates for the motion, three against -- in New York City. Each evening begins at 6:00P with a complimentary cocktail period. As you enter the theater before the debate starts at 6:45P, you cast your vote for or against the evening's motion. Those results are displayed midway through the debate as each side makes its statements. After all six panelists speak, the audience has a chance to ask the speakers questions and vote again. The debate finishes with brief summations from the panelists, the votes are tallied and a winning side is declared.
@AfroSunGoddess
the best way is to give a time line and stop it after that.
They will do no such thing, because they are operating on the premise that one needs to exercise external restriction a.k.a property rights in order to secure economic advantage. If African were to collectively control it's vast resources then the European will be at the mercy of the African Collective in terms of access.

@charbonelle Thank. people in Africa do not want to wait to be feed. they want to work and provide for their families. AID has destroyed Africa. 1970 10% in poverty but today 80%. the best way is to give a time line and stop it after that. just like what happened after world war 2.

Africans can redeem control over their land and resources by accumulating and ministering capital, organize industry catering to under-served [low -income i.e the global majority] markets by way of commercial enterprise in the form of :
Social Enterprise --(Social Programs that are turn into businesses)
Small and Medium Enterprise -- (Businesses that use a franchise model)
Co-operative Corporation -- ( Integrates: credit unions, worker co-op and R&D)
In this way Africans can be self-reliant.

Typical liberal... since the fact aren't on her side she has to obfuscate the dialogue by vaguely insisting "well it's really complex... uh what about our dignity?"
Gayle is preoccupied with the emotional aspects - too focused on asserting her self-righteous humanity to consider a more pragmatic approach. She is more concerned with how her initiatives are perceived by colleagues and/or the general public than she is with addressing the failure of current policies.
Aid is not an end in itself.

Africa doesn't need AID. They need trade. And they need the Europeans to get the hell off of their land and trade fairly for the resources that they are sucking up.
As long a Europeans are exploiting Africa they'll always be poor, broke, uneducated and dependent on foreign aid.

Our forefathers did not need Billions of dollars in aid to make this country great. Africa has had so much longer to advance itself, why would they pull it together now with money?
