A Groomer's Job

I've been a groomer 23 years. It always amazes me how the customer's vanity often comes before the welfare of their pets. I have made it a very clear policy in my shop that I am there for the comfort and well being of the dog, not the owner's pride.
I refuse to rip matting out of a dog. Period. If someone gets a long haired, high maintenance breed, they need to be willing to wither maintain it at home in between grooms, or have the dog groomed on a schedule that will keep the dog mat free.

@cursedgem ..the best one i ever got was "i had my windows rolled down and the dog got matted on the way here".....

Had a customer come in once who said that three days prior to the groom she'd taken the dog to a friend's house and it ran into a bush and she couldn't get it out for a few minutes. Apparently before the "bush" incident, the dog hadn't had a single tangle on it. This dog was completely and totally matted, but apparently it ran through the "neglect bush" and got matted to the skin. >.< Come on people, I'm not stupid.

Ha ha I hope people read this and realize how they sound. Every groomer in America deals with this everyday, after 12 years grooming I don't put up with this behavior and neither should any of you other groomers. I know they make you deal with this at the Petsmart/Petcos but seriously quit and start your own shops. Change the way our profession is viewed by the public and get the respect you work so hard for and are rarely appreciated for.

This was clearly made by a groomer from petsmart

They should have added in the video about people wanting you to change the coat type of the dog or the DNA! Such as... "my dog is half schnauzer and half poodle, but i don't want it to look like either! make it look like a shih tzu!"

@jhilhan I completely agree with you on that one, I also let the owner know that if their dog takes longer than the average time it would normally take to do that they will be charged extra and that if they are unable to come within 30-35 minutes of the phone call they will also be charged as I don't baby sit dogs after they've been groomed. So far most are fine with this, though I am not looking forward to going into big city grooming this year.

Haha love it!

Would you go into a mechanic, tell them how (you think) to fix your car, expect them to MacGyver their way through the process if they dont have the right parts, stick your hands in the way and mess about with engine parts as they work, and then demand they only charge the price of an oil change?
Listening to the customer's demands, she sounds so ridiculous and crazy.
What's fucking sad is I've argued with every one her suggestions before. *sigh*

@nerualselerim I agree! I can't begin to explain what's wrong with the term "puppy cut" Where do they even get that from? I never use it and I've never heard another groomer use it. (I've worked with A LOT of different groomers)
