[Lyrics]

Love is a razor and I walked the line on that silver blade
Slept in the dust with his daughter, her eyes red with the slaughter of innocence
But I will pray for her, I will call her name out loud
I would bleed for her, if I could only see her now

Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Balancing on a ledge, living on a razor's edge
Balancing on a ledge, you know, you know

The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...

Circle of fire my baptism of joy at an end it seems
The seventh lamb slain, the book of life opens before me
And I will pray for you, someday I may return
Don't you cry for me, beyond is where I learn

Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, you know, you know

The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...

Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, you know, you know

The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...
The evil that men do lives on and on...

The evil, the evil, the evil that men do
The evil, the evil, the evil that men do

'The Evil That Men Do' is a song from Iron Maiden's album ''Seventh Son Of A Sevent Son'',released in 1988.

''The title of this song is taken from a quote in William Shakespeare's Julius Cæsar. It is part of Marcus Antonius's speech as he addresses the crowd of Romans after Cæsar's murder, defending the defunct ruler and forcefully, yet indirectly, condemning Brutus, one of the murderers.

Friends, Romans, country men, lend me your ears; I come to bury Cæsar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones; so let it be with Cæsar.
Julius Cæsar. ACT III Scene 2.

The song however is unrelated, with lyrics that are extremely well-written, quite poetic, and difficult to understand. Its topic is similar to 'Infinite Dreams' in that it also seems to relate to whatever is beyond death. It could be some sort of "flashback" to the conception of the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. The character telling this story is apparently the first Seventh Son, but it is not clear with whose daughter he "slept in the dust". Likewise, the "slaughter of innocence" may refer to the loss of the virginity. But whose?

It is however evident that the character is in love with that woman ("I would bleed for her"), but seems to have somehow lost contact with her ("If only I could see her now"). The rest of the lyrics hint at the Seventh Son contemplating suicide. Maybe the visions he has and the loss of his love are too much for him. Nevertheless, he still has hope to return some day...

Musically, 'The Evil That Men Do' is also very compelling, and is one of the best songs on the album. The chorus is absolutely blinding and constitutes a great opportunity of interaction with the audience during the concerts. ''

'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son' is a concept album by heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released in 1988 as the band's seventh studio album on EMI in Europe and its sister label Capitol Records in the US (it was re-released by Sanctuary/Columbia Records in the US in 2002).
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was the last Iron Maiden album to feature guitarist Adrian Smith until the album Brave New World in 2000 (he did write a song that Bruce Dickinson finished for the next album, No Prayer for the Dying, titled "Hooks in You", a loose tie-in to the Charlotte the Harlot saga).

  • he sang the chorus bad,but rest of the song rocks !

  • @ThePentagram9 I'm sure you meant that you love Blaze's studio albums, but in live performances you prefer Bruce.Right? I have the same opinion.I love Blaze and his albums with Maiden, but I prefer Bruce in live concerts.
