Caterina Valente singing The Breeze And I.
Caterina Valente (b. January 14, 1931, Paris, France) was born into an Italian circus family. Her mother was a clown and her father was an accordion player; as a child she worked in the circus as well. She performed in Europe as a singer for several years, but her career as an internationally known vocalist began in 1953 when she joined Kurt Edelhagen's band in Germany. She was soon signed to Polydor and made her recording debut for them the same year. Her first big hits came soon after that. Two songs written for her by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona charted in Europe and eventually England and the U.S. "Malaguena" was her first big hit, followed by "Analucia" which when re-released in an English version as "The Breeze and I" became a top ten hit in both the U.K. and the U.S.

  • Caterina Valente causó sensación en los años 50 con esta interpretación de Malagueña de Ernesto Lecuona. Renee Zambrana Granja

  • I'm the one who posted about breaking my dad's 78rpm recording of Caterina Valente's recording of the Breeze and I. I did get the CD and my dad loved it. My wife so how much I enjoyed Ms. Valente's music, she ordered me my own CD for Valentines. So again Thank YOU for your posting Caterina's recording here. My 21 year old son, has been listening to the CD also and has become a fan of this very gifted singer as well.

  • I FIRST HEARD CATERINA VALENTE AT A CONCERT IN NUREMBERG, GERMANY IN 1955 AND HAVE BEEN A FAN OF HER'S FOR MANY YEARS..I WISH TO THANK ALL THE FINE PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH YOUTUBE FOR FOR MAKING MANY OF US REMEMBER OUR YOUTH.....

  • Continuing from comment below, I'm embarrassed to say that prior to tonight I'd never heard of Ms. Valente. I found her album with this song via Barnes and Noble. I'm ordering it and will give it to my dad, who's 88 as a blast from his past. Thank you for sharing this. I'd have never found her name or the CD without your posting. Truly Amazing.

  • This is amazing. My dad had the Decca 78 rpm of this and I used to love to play it. One day I dropped it and it broke. That song I remember from back then about 52 years ago. I didn't know the singers name. When she sang that part up high it would send chills up my back. I found the name of the song years ago, but had no clue who sang it. Tonight, I thought about that record again and remembered to go and see if I could find it here on youtube. It's just as I remembered it. Thank you for this

  • @terracite what can possibly said by a eventy year old that treaures this song when he was 15 years old. she hite three octaves with perfection. need anything more said said ...........ernsto lecuona is at piece........'guantanamera'...............thanks brother

  • This and "Poinciana" are among her very best, which is saying quite a lot, I think! I've had no luck at all finding her version of "Poinciana" though ... anybody have any ideas? I'd really love to have that, too.

  • You wrote: "two songs written for her by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona"..... Are you sure? What are those songs? By the way.. Malagueña and Andalucia were written as a piano pieces in 1919 and 1922 repectively. Later published(in the 30') as part of Andalucia suite. Caterina was born in 1931

  • wonderful voice, nice song , nostalgic feelings !!! TNX !!!
