White House Admits Bin Laden Wasn't Involved in 911

The white house admits that Bin Laden is not and was not involved with 911. I don't understand how most Americans continue to believe Bin Laden is responsible for the horrific attacks on America on September 11th when the White House admits on record that they don't blame him for 911.
Is it that Americans don't want to face the fact that if Bin Laden didn't do it then someone else did and that someone else just might be they're own government or a small group of people within it.
I'm really very interested in the mentality and denial of those people who don't want to look at the facts and deny them when they do. I want to know what they have to gain by lying to themselves about this, why the complete denial? innocent
