Biography:
Marreese Akeem Speights (born August 4, 1987 in St. Petersburg, Florida) is an American basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA. A former starting center for the University of Florida men's basketball team, he won the NCAA national championship in 2007. He played basketball at Admiral Farragut Academy where they retired his jersey number after just one year. He also played basketball at Hargrave Military Academy.Speights began his career at Florida in 2006, and averaged approximately four points and two rebounds in only six minutes per game as a freshman for the national champion Gators. He saw few minutes because of other big men Al Horford, Joakim Noah, and Chris Richard.

Speights ended the 2007-08 season averaging 14.5 points, 8.1 rebounds per game and 1.4 blocks per game. After his sophomore season, he declared himself eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft, held on June 26. Speights confirmed with Florida coach Billy Donovan on June 12, 2008 that he would not be returning to the Gators.He currently ranks eighth all-time in Florida history in blocked shots per game (0.93 bpg). Would also rank second all-time in field goal percentage (.633) but falls just short of the minimum qualifications of 500 career field goal attempts. He has registered 12 career double-doubles
Speights was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 16th pick of the first round in the 2008 NBA Draft. He signed with Philadelphia on July 18, 2008

This man is singled-handedly making Elton Brand expendable. Love his game. And those of you who are knocking his Defense, all I have to say is: look at Elton's 1st couple of years as a Clipper. Laterally, he was extremely slow footed, and was easily confused on switches because he always turned his head. Give the kid another year or two, he will be a moderate-to-good interior defensive presence.
