This famous scene from the highly-controversial made for TV movie "The Day After" shows a nuclear attack on a major US City, in the midwest. Yes, the special effects are cheesy.. It's interesting ...

Russia's relationship with Iran and Pakistan is dubious at best. I am not sure about China's dealings or relationships with any Middle-eastern countries, though they may fall into the same boat as Russia, as China has and is unwilling to take any part in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. If the countries in question actually are able to make nuclear warheads, they would still hold little power in terms of global powers. Like I said, if they use so much as one bomb, they are gone.

i hope you're right. those two nations fit what was called ''the axis of evil.'' the world doesn't benefit from them whatsoever and would be better off without them anyway.
the key is not to let them develop nukes to begin with. russia or red china is supplying them with the info and supplies, let's face it.

The United States has been watching Iran and North Korea very closely, and has been warning both countries not to develop nuclear weapons. North Korea tested nuclear weapons in 2006 and in 2009, both were very small yields and presumed failures, though we can't be sure. If Iran, Pakistan and North Korea proliferate and manufacture nuclear weapons, nothing may happen for a while. Those countries know that if they use them, they will be wiped off the face of the Earth.

what happens if that crazy iranian dictator gets one. what gets me is we are sitting back on our duffs while he is busy developing one. n. korea too.
wouldn't they suffer eventually from radiation poisoning or are they crazy enough not to care. i think they're crazy enough not to care.
second question....how would we - half-way around the world - be affected by a iranian/israeli nuclear exchange.

they had to let a few main characters survive for a while or otherwise they'd have to end the movie.
but in the end, everyone was dying. all those people getting sick and losing their hair have but a short time to live. days or weeks at the longest. personally, i would have rather been taken out in the intial blast than suffer a relatively slow death from over-radiation.

there are a comment or two here about the lack of sophitication in the special effects. those mushroom clouds after the blinding flashes were pretty accurate and really don't in my opinion have a lot of room for improvement. this is 24 years ago is a geologic era in computer evolution.
i'm 57 and was living in a new orleans suburb at the time. there was indeed a lot of controversy at work about the movie the day after its t.v. release.
it scared the bojesus out of plenty of people.

At the time of this movie, the USSR was run by creeps like Andropov and Chernenko. The "peace" movement tried to sell the idea that these guys were just misunderstood and that just holding hands and singing "Give Peace a Chance" would make everything nice. Reagan and Thatcher were depicted as the warmongering villains. The USSR was VERY dangerous at this time. They knew they were losing the Cold War and they were very much "sore losers". They were capable of starting a war but not finishing it.

Never read Hiroshima have you?
This movie is pretty much a parallel of that.
