What Neil had to say about this song: " I remember helping out at the time in my father-in-laws haberdashery shop. Business was slow enough to allow me to write a country ballad -- or so I thought, until I heard UB40's version. It was about drinking wine, which I hardly do, and forgetting, which I occasionally attempt. I wrote 'Red Wine' just to keep busy while waiting for customers and never gave a thought to it ever being recorded by anyone, much less by me."

I took this from the 'Classics: The Early Years"
I have this song on 6 different albums. This version is also on the 'In My Lifetime' album and was from the Bang single recorded in 1967. I have several live versions of 'Red Wine'. My favorite is from 'Hot August Night' which is on the 'Play Me' album as well. On the "The Greatest Hits' album live version he speaks of UB40 and I think he was enjoying the fact that they made it a hit.

  • I love his --"...and forgetting ,which I ocasionally attempt " line---explains a bunch about why I always felt Neil was writing my life..and I love his music so much.

  • the original--and still the best version of this great song--in my opinion.

  • Red Wine for me means dextromethorphan. A drug that does EVERYTHING he describes. And it's legal.

  • I knew that he wrote it and originally performed it, though I didn't know he preferred the UB40 version, which I have to admit, I do prefer more. Kind of like the story of Johnny Cash performing the song "Hurt" which was originally written and performed by Nine Inch Nails.

  • Wow, Neil Diamond wrote this cracker? NEW RESPECT!

  • Oh yes; I do remember this wonderful song done by him. The original 45 single I heard on the radio back then had background vocals in it. This one here is the LP version. I have yet to find the single cut anywhere.

  • love this song. thanks for sharing!
