This was the b-side of the "December Will Be Magic Again" single, released in 1980. The song is also featured on the "This Woman's Work" box set.

Lyrics:

Warm and soothing,
That's how I remember home.
Walking into arms
Through the back door.
Hearing voices I know well,
And long for.

Cold and boozy,
Our holiday in the Alps.
Sitting in the lobby,
Mostly smoking.
Choking on the woozy afternoon.

I'm reeling in the music
And I've only had a few.
And I'm afraid
By the way we grow old,
My darling.

Abrupt, too moody,
You making our party list.
I remember sulking
On the sofa.
For most of the winter
We were strangers.

Just one more
To ease the ache,
Before the night takes me.
When you stay asleep
On your side of the bed,
Don't look at me,
Don't look at you...

I'm reeling in the music
And I've only had a few.
And I'm afraid
By the way we grow old,
My darling.

  • I'm sure this isn't the same as the version on vinyl, which I listened to over and over in the 80's. There's something different about the melody.

  • Are you sure? I have never heard about more than one version of this song. But I could always ask at the Homeground forum.

  • I'm pretty certain this is different, though it's a long time since I've heard the original. The vocal line is different, has a slightly different tune, though it's very subtle.

  • I have asked at the Homeground forum and they all say it's the same version as on the original single. Maybe it's just because it was a long time since you played it that you thought it sounded different? It could also be the remastering to CD that made it sound different.

  • Maybe it's unwise to ask, but what is the song about?

  • No, it's not unwise to ask. It's about a couple preparing for Christmas and the wife talks about how their marriage is getting colder and deteriorating as they grow older. And also about how happy they were when they were younger.

  • Never heard this either. Kate is too too brilliant. What a God gifted voice and spirit. She is one who can absolutely bring tears to my eyes. No one like her

Just what I was thinking (-:

  • Well done finding & uploading this rarity ~ sensational.

    Thank you.

  • Nobody else can sound so vibrant and so melancholy at the same time. Never heard this before. I love Kates voice in these simpler songs. Quite a sad song but I love it.

  • Not heard this in ages. Yes, it's a B-side and as far as I can tell, it's the original. Nice to hear it again!
