Killer Whales feeding on a Humpback whale

On 7/17/08 - Rarely documented Transient Killer Whales feed on a dead Humpback between Chugach Bay and East Chugach Island.

It appears that the newly opened blubber areas are much whiter than the exposed areas. The whale appears to have been dead for over 24 hours. The footage is being reviewed by the whale researchers that I mentioned. I will post more information or add a link to the report.

The whale researchers in the area could not cross the rip to the scene.  We were asked to get as much identifiable footage as possible.

We do not harass or "GO" too close intentionally. Tide and wind drift moved us into a range that I wasn't comfortable operating the propellers until we drifted apart.

yeah orcas kill and eat great whites and they kill whales and other dolphins to!arielles0 is right they eat pretty much what ever the hell they want!

The carcass indeed doesn't look like particularly fresh, but still it could be well killed by those killer whales.

Perhaps the kws had killed it one or two days ago and filled their initial hunger, then came back later for further feeding thus making this footage.

Kws are not known as good scavengers, as they have very weak sensory system to detect chemical trace in water by smell / taste, though it still can not be ruled out that the kws found the carcass by pure luck.

Underwater footage would have been awesome! Did they kill the humpback whale like the way they do with gray whale calf?

Its not rare for killer whales to drown other whales and keep them from coming up for air. They can kill sprem whales which are very large. I have been watching killer whales on youtube and they are great hunters and very smart.
