The cross choke from mount seems simple enough, so why do so many people have trouble finishing it? And why is it that Roger Gracie can defeat so many elite BJJ fighters with such a simple technique?

Nic Gregoriades from the Jiu-Jitsu Brotherhood, and Roger's first black belt has put together an indepth look at the cross collar choke from mount in this video. Nic takes a look at proper mount position, balance, weight distribution, defeating your opponent's neck protection, how to properly take a grip on the lapel, mainting mount and preventing sweeps, and finally applying the finish.

This video is the first in an ongoing series called BJJ Building Blocks, where we will be taking a detailed look at fundamental techniques and what makes them work, as well as common mistakes.

  • This has improved this move for me by like 60%

  • @bjjweekly So who won the shirt?

  • Beautiful.

  • I see that I am past the deadline. Can I still buy the shirt from your store? What is the link to the store. I don't see it on the regular site?

  • "If you're struggling to do that, it's because your hands are weak. Sorry to break it to you, but that's what it is. Do some grip training or grip strengthening exercises."

This made me laugh but I appreciate his candor, and he speaks the truth. Too many people try to make collar chokes work with a compromised grip. The mechanics are simple but it takes time to build not only the muscle memory for chokes, but the muscle to hit them against a resisting adult as well.

  • awesome breakdown. the little details are what make the difference at the highest level. i think this is why roger is able to dominate because of his attention to each technique rather than being ok at 20 moves it is better to master 5 moves

  • I know this vid is for the attacker...but for the defender, crossing your arms in a x fashion is bad. the arm that is on top while doing that, is easy to break through for the attacker. make the inner wrist meet then flare you fingers out. this allows you to keep your forearms and elbows closer to your body.

  • why doesn't he begin by saying "Hi!" first??? putain la politesse les gars, merde quoi? kkkkkkkkkkkk

  • Great to see some insight on Roger's choke. Thanks Nic.
