breeding mutts is also just what happens. All dogs come from the same place. Personally I prefer a shelter mutt or a crossbred dog on account of the fact that mulri-breed dogs often have better dispositions and less health issues. The only dogs that I have ever had that required urgent medical attention due to genetic issues were.....PUREBREDS. These are a large dog, and are surprisingly QUITE capable of being able to live outside.
@MsLabMom No, it's a chill dog breed back bred to look like a Dire Wolf. It's extremely calm, loyal, loving, and not easily irritable in the least. They eat a lot though.
@MsLabMom Yeah, probably he is rolling over in his grave from all the AKC GSDs that can't perform either sheep herding or protection due to health and/or temperament issues. Working dogs should be preserved for the work they were selectively bred to perform. But, the American Alsatian is not a working dog and wasn't meant to take over the GSD, but provide a large breed alternative to the working dog that would hopefully help keep the working dogs working.
@MsLabMom As of February 21, 2010, the official name of this breed has been changed from Alsatian Shepalute, to American Alsatian. It was changed by the board and approved by the members.
@MsLabMom The millions of dogs euthanized yearly, although VERY sad, is not due to the AA. Actually, current trends in dog breeding have recorded that dog sales from breeders are on the rise. Shelters are now importing dogs from overseas to fill their kennels and it is BIG business. AAs have no problem selling and no AA has ever been in a shelter. Our breed club tracks each AA sold as well as each AA's reported health concerns. Do the research instead of blindly believing minority opinions.
@MsLabMom You are CORRECT that breeding crossbreeds does not necessarily make a breed healthier, but what it does is create diversity, which can indeed create healthier dogs. You won't like this answer, but crossbreeding is one of the three techniques this is performed within this breed. The other two are linebreeding and inbreeding. All three, crossbreeding (or outcrossing), linebreeding, and inbreeding are essential to creating a new breed of dog.
@MsLabMom Nice of you to join us again. Obviously you are passionate about your opinions, however, you are mistaken. Again, you cannot justify your opinion with scholarly research to back up your claims. I ask you again... How do you think dogs were bred before OFA, PENNhip, and CERF just 50 years ago? AND... Why does hip dysplasia have a higher rate of occurrence now than before? ALSO... wolves have lived outside for many thousands of years. I don't think they are suffering much for it.
@shepaluteprez Sadly, this is just a puppymill. Why in the world would you breed a mixed breed when to many of these mixed breeds are euthanized every year because there are not enough homes for them to go to? Breeding mutts is puppymilling 101. Absolutely no health testing goes into breeding these dogs. Females are bred on their first heat cycle. The dogs live outside. They are no being bred to Irish Wolfhounds, too. Breeding cross breeds does NOT necessarily make a dog healthier.
