When CD and DVD players stop working, its usually because of the drawer not opening and/or shutting. For this CD player, the problem turned out to be a broken belt between the motor and the wheel that has the gear that opens the drawer. I replaced the belt with a rubber band.

If you like this one, you may like my other which uses a different player and solution:

  • i have a problem and i would be great full if you could help me my drawer will open but sometimes will not shut i have tried cleaning the belt greasing the cogs its a sony cdp-m12 its quite old so pleas help me.

  • @theeastoe1 the times that it doesn't shut, can you hear it trying to shut? if you hear nothing at all, then it could be electrical issue, but if you hear it trying then it must be mechanical. maybe something is loose and obstructing the close? I would unplug it, open the case, plug it back in, and watch the drawer while its trying to close and see if you can see anything that's getting in the way. You could try nudging it in different places while its trying to close to see where it needs help.

  • Is that a Magnavox CDB-262? I just bought one recently; couldn't ask for a better player for the price, especially with the extremely transparent sounding DACs.

  • @douro20 This one is a Magnavox CDB-492

  • MisterEricB, my computer drive is not working. The computer says there is nothing in the drive to eject, and when I put a new disk in it makes a whirring sound and spits the cd right back out. I can't find any info online about what to do

  • @consgn2oblivion sorry, but computer cd drives are quite a bit different than standalone cd players. in your case, it could be just a software issues, but maybe not. harder to know with those, sorry

  • @MisterEricB thank you for helping me it was a faulty ribbon cable that had split it was a very small cut on the cable going to the drawer mechanism thank you again

  • OMG, a Philips CDM4 Swing Arm Laser mechanism!! Those lasers were made to last!.

BTW, it's a very bad idea to put a rubber band in place of a proper belt because the rubber band will melt and ruin the mechanism in less than a year, depending on the quality of the band. You can get the original belt on any electronics store and it will last a lot longer.

  • A very useful video, most helpful, thank you!

  • GOD YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!!!! I was about to buy a new dvd player but then I saw your video! All I did was use a rubberband laying around and it worked! THX A MILLION!!!!
