In late 2005, I found a really cool tutorial online (google "zarria normal map photography") and followed it, this is the result. Basically, you take pictures with light coming from different angles, and then in an image editor, munge that into a normal map. Super fun/geeky way to spend an afternoon.

  • @TheFXGuy im maya you just use the normal map as a displacement then under edit you can convert displacement to geometry

    greetings

  • wow. the normal map turned out amazing. better than a normal generator!

I know quite a bit about normal maps (in my opinion) and was thinking, with how they work, couldn't you use them to extrude geometry? I bet there's a script out there, but I haven't really looked.
