Horatiu Radulescu's "Clepsydra" for 16 Sound Icons. A Sound Icon is his name for the instrument he invented... sort of. It's literally just a piano with the top off and turned onto its side for easier access to the strings. This piece is played entirely on the strings of the pianos. Radulescu is a sort of quasi-spectralist, quasi-microtonalist, quasi-insane composer that's very hard to pin down and define in only a few words. He composers using Spectral techniques but uses his own, personal scale system, which *technically* puts him into the equally undefinable "Post-Spectralist" group. His music is not particularly similar in aesthetic to a Murail or Vivier, for instance, and he often scores for OUTRAGEOUS ensembles, such as 40 flutes or, say, 16 upturned pianos, which means a fair amount of his stuff hasn't been recorded and is likely to stay that way unless more people get seriously interested in him. Xenakis would also use very specific and sometimes odd ensembles and nearly everything he's written is on a discography somewhere, so hopefully someday we'll get to hear more of what Radulescu has to offer.

  • Miraculous sounds of a miraculous composer.

  • Rest in peace H.Radulescu. His music I've heard so far is wonderful and like many others I heard many very funny stories about what a great human being he was.

  • I don't just want the score for this - I want a DVD of the performance!!

  • This is actually freaking amazing seriously. John - you are a legend man with these uploads

  • Please tell me this man is not dead.Ive only known about him for 6 months. He is incredible.somehow pushes further thn many better known. I don't think Ades is as uninteresting as that I thikn he has found a niche and gets more attention . UnthoughtfulPop music it is not. but kick ass comments from humongous 11 inch is a particular reason I like him and his tastes.God has he enriched my world than many new music textbooks.

  • do you know how this was scored?

  • @caekface Yeh I guess, and there is a lot worse, I was probably just having a bad day! And we do hear a lot more of his music than Radulescu's, and come on...there isnt really any comparison there! Radulescu is seriously under appreciated. Organisers need to get their acts together and put together concerts, regardless of the impracticalities in assembling such unconventional ensembles....PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THIS MUSIC!!!!

  • Can someone explain this to me? I'd like to appreciate "the future of classical music", but this just scares the shit out of me. ._.

  • John11inch,

How dare you insult Mr. Timberlake! By the way, Rădulescu is a sic'-ass vat'! Thanks for this post, man! This channel is dope!

  • Magical!
