  • I've only used a cable tool rig once, about 25 years ago. Where I work, there are too many water sands. It is fun to watch though. The time we used it, we "pounded" out beneath

    production casing for an open-hole completion. Don't remember the results.

  • That's what the other larger cable tool rigs (Bucyrus Erie 28L, 36L's and Walker Neer 43, 33's) in my area are used for. They drill into the pay zone after the rotary drills the hole to just above the pay, they drill the surface on a lot of them too so they can drive casing through loss circulation zones too. drill surface, move off, rotary drills to pay, cable tool comes back in to finish.
