The Gamecock Fleet of Hull. In the days of the early Steam Trawlers. Circa 1920.
Filmed in winter, the weather is bad but Fishermen still work, despite the bitter cold with the old oilskins and the dangerous transfer of fish to the mothership.
My uncle left Beer in Devonshire to join this fleet which was owned by his great uncle Captain James Leyman who was also a man from Beer. I would welcome any authenticated information about this fleet and especially any information about Captain James Leyman
My Grandfather was involved in that action. He told my Dad (also later a Skipper) that the Russians were spooked by a flare being fired off by one of the English boats, apparently to signal the trawlers to come around on their track in unison. My Grandfather unfortunately perished shortly after WW1 when his trawler , The 'Amber' of Hull hit a stray sea mine.
