Superstorm Sandy US victims shown support

One month on from Superstorm Sandy and residents of America's eastern seaboard are trying to ensure victims of the storm are not forgotten.



In New York and New Jersey a secret Santa performed a remarkable act of generosity by handing out USD 100 bills to those affected by the storm.



The wealthy businessman who didn't want to be identified is giving away USD 100,000 over the Christmas period. The gift giver dressed in a red shirt with elf written on it instead of the traditional santa suit. Victims of the storm were grateful to the kindness:



Janice Kennedy, Staten Island Resident:



"We lost our whole house, I had two properties and we lost everything. We were on the beach, so the house is gone, and we're just waiting for insurance to see, you know, where it goes so we're trying to replace some clothes and trying to get our life back in order, it's going to take a while, but we're trying."



Meanwhile as states hit by the storm struggle to return to normal, lawmakers are eager for the White House to make its emergency request to Congress for more Sandy relief money.



One of the hardest hit communities was the neighbourhood of Breezy Point in the borough of Queens in New York, the extensive damage made by the storm turned it into a semi ghost town with residents forced to evacuate still unable to return to their homes.
