India first undertook the project of providing a national identity card to its citizen way back in 2003. As part of a pilot project, Lakhpat taluka in Kutch district of Gujarat was chosen for its unique location.
Lakhpat shares its taluka borders with neighbouring Pakistan. Often subjected to identity checks by the Police, the National Identity Card provided to its residents, has been a success in this remote but unique part of this country.
