Did you notice the short passage with Japanese-style music (flute and drums)? Where was this version performed?

It is wired. You meant at 2:30, right? That is obviously Kabuki music. The uploader must mixed the sound. This is a very tradictional piece of Peking operat, should never have Kabuki music in it.

Yes, the Kabuki-style scene runs from 2:23 to 2:44. Not only is the music the Kabuki rendition of Noh music (violent spirit's dance), but the choreography and the spirit's costume are borrowed from Kabuki, too. The dais is also reminiscent of the lower dais used in such Kabuki dances.
It is obvious this performance of the Monkey King is an experimental one.
Besides, I noticed that the Monkey King's part in this act is played by two actors, the second relaying the first.

Character in 1:38 is not monkey king; it is an enemy that the monkey king is fighting against.
