the money "wasted" on Amtrak isn't wasted at all- its being spent on services that benefit the common person. Imagine that- something that the US government does that *doesn't* benefit ONLY the rich!
It is wasted if they lose millions of dollars per year because of inefficiency. Private companies can't be inefficient or they go out of business. Govt has the unlimited checkbook and has little to no incentive to control costs. That's why Fed-Ex beats the crap out of USPS because they control costs and are very efficient. USPS loses $10M a day, but will not allow anyone else to deliver first class mail (it's illegal). If they are so great at it, then they have nothing to fear from a private co.
This is how an effective propaganda system works, shout down ideological opponents, make enough incorrect assumptions that the interviewee doesn't have the time to reject, then get mad at the interviewee for trying to refute the absurd claims.
Have you mailed a letter or used Amtrak lately? They're fantastic, and they are public services, NOT businesses. They exist to server the public, NOT a few rich investors. Besides that though, Amtrak costs the same as a few stealth bombers. If you care about cutting wasteful spending, get rid of the so-called "defense department."
Why is it my responsibility as a Non-Amtrak Using taxpayer to make sure people like you can use Amtrak? If you live too far from your job, then move closer to your job. Also, check your history: Amtrak was bought by the Feds temporarily and it was supposed to be sold off in three years. Here we are over thrity years later and it still loses millions and is only kept in service to get Eastern politicians their votes. If that's not corruption, then what is?
No, unfortunately the US government does not exist to serve you, so you will pay for some things that you won't end up using. But at the same time, Amtrak does still benefit you- it cuts down on traffic congestion, it reduces pollution, it helps other people out (have you ever cared about someone besides yourself?).
If voting for Amtrak is getting politicians votes, then the public apparently wants Amtrak. So listening to what the public wants is corruption now?
You just contradicted yourself-you said the govt. doesn't work for us, but they should listen to taxpayers. So which is it? Do whatever they want or listen to us? You sound like one of those libs who think it's the govt. responsibility to take care of everyone. People are free to use Amtrak, but they should pay for the privelage themselves and not expect everyone else in America who doesn't have access to pay for it. You are free to do what you want, but don't expect me to pay for your freedom.
