Confronting Haliburton, #OccupyPGH, Pittsburgh, Nov. 15th, 2011 (pt 1 of 2)

Members of Occupy Pittsburgh and local environmental activists marched to confront a Haliburton Conference in downtown Pittsburgh. There was a marching band. There was cake. The cops came en masse with barking German Shepard dogs and snatched people from the crowds for holding banners like it was the Civil Rights era. Five people were arrested.

In the spirit of movements across the country against corporate power, local organizers, activists, and occupiers are calling for an occupation of the Developing Unconventional Gas conference in Pittsburgh.

Tuesday, November 15

5:15pm - March on the conference, meet at Occupy Pittsburgh/Mellon Green

6:00pm - People's Reception and Occupation begins, David Lawrence Convention Center

On November 15th, Halliburton is hosting a reception for the rest of the oil and gas industry to kick off the Developing Unconventional Gas conference. At 5:15pm, we will march from Occupy Pittsburgh to the David Lawrence Convention Center and kick off our occupation of the conference with a people's reception for economic and environmental justice.

The gas industry is poisoning our air and water and hijacking our so-called democracy. They say they are bringing economic opportunity but all we see is exploitation. Stand with us to resist corporate power - join the people's reception or organize your own creative action to disrupt the conference!

I am with occupy. I am with a person who feels that they must block traffic in an act of civil disobedience to bring attention to the cause. The police were obviously pleading with the protester and offering him a chance to leave the roadway and continue his protest on the sidewalk. He instead chose to hold his ground and to get arrested. Calling the police ""F***ing pigs" only serves to discredit the movement and alienate the police who need their paycheck as much as anyone else.
