It may be the calls of the gibbons in the background. (At times it almost looks like she is trying to make the gibbon call.) Or it may just be she is having a bad day. But Tua was periodically pounding on the wall and hissing for almost an hour.

The baby, Batu, seems perfectly calm and unaffected by Tua's behavior. And whenever Tua looks down at the baby, her expression changes from anger to love.

At one point in this video Sugi comes over to try to calm her down, but she nearly twisted his arm off. He did, however, try again later, and was much more successful. (See my video "Sugi Kisses Irritable Tua", also uploaded today.)

When I left, everything was fine. And the keepers, of course, were closely monitoring the situation the whole time.

  • orangutans need real jungles to live in. not steel jungles

  • @PHXsuns13n8f1s I disagree. I believe orangutans adapt very well to zoo habitats. I also believe a zoo environment is actually better for them because it allows them to be social animals instead of being solitary as they would be in the wild. When Tua has one of her temper tantrums, it is usually because she thinks the keepers are taking too long to prepare treats. But, overall, she seems to be a very content orangutan, and a very proud and good mother for Batu.

  • "hey sexy >u> wanna fruit ?"

"> n > don't you give me that you forgot our anniversary"

  • @4ester44 Oh-oh. That means Sugi is is BIG trouble!

  • i feel bad for them cause they are locked up in those cages all day, its obvious why they are mad... but LOL

the mom is so cranky like...

Dad: sweetie do you need anything for the baby?

Mom: *SLAPS* GET AWAY!!! this was your fault!! XDDD

    Baby: ????

    XD

  • @jessmjfan989 I like your script to go with the scene. But I disagree that they are mad because they are locked up in cages all day. Their exhibit is spacious, and they also go outside in spring, summer, and early fall. Tua has occasional tantrums, but not for the reason you are thinking. Sometimes, she gets annoyed when the gibbons call, or something like that. It could even be that the keepers were a minute or so late bringing her treats. But at least 90% of the time, she is fine.

  • same as being locked up in any sanitorium

  • zoo's are fucked up, caging up innocent animals that have no idea why they are there

  • @KristaOrangutan In this video, you can only see the area near the glass where the keepers can reach through the mesh and scratch the orangutans' backs or give them treats.

The whole rest of the inside viewing area is enclosed with glass. There is also a large outdoor area with grass and trees, and the "downstairs" area for the orangutans to have privacy if they want it.

They are never forced to come upstairs if they don't want to.

  • Does this mother orangutan have an area that is not a wire cage? Does her enclosure have some live vegetation and privacy?
