In this video I show you the basics of basting your quilt top on your frame to prepare it for some free-motion quilting patterns. The frame and machine setup I use is the Stretch Frame and Voyager 17 both made by Hinterberg. This video only depicts my style of floating my batting and quilt top and some free-motion designs I chose to do on the quilt I was working on when filming this video.

  • Do you know what brand chalk pencil you used? I have some but they don't work!!

  • @SaffySioux It's an Allary Chalk Cartridge Set. Hope that helps... do a google search and you'll find it. :o)

  • How do you quilt the top 1/8 of an inch free-hand? Eesh, I do not have a straight eye, I'm not sure if I could do that.

  • @SaffySioux lol. yea.. it takes some practice.. some longarms have a channel lock that you can switch on and the machine will only move side to side so you can just slide it across and do it evenly. I don't have that so I free hand it. :o)

  • is it possible to do this using a regular sewing machine?

  • @sj1605 Yes.. but there are several different factors that have to be in place in order to do so. I recommend doing a search for "free motion quilting" and checking out some of the other tutorials on YouTube.

  • @larchul08 I'll add your suggestion to my tutorial to-do list!! Thanks! Since every domestic sewing machine varies as to the features to setup doing free motion I will really have to sit down and plan out what to include in the video. But I hear ya'!

  • Vanessa, everything is great to learn the free motion, but not all people can afford a long arm sewing machine, can you show us how to do it on a regular sewing machine, we can all go to youtube and watch other videos, but we all know that nothing is better than YOUR videos, so can we please see a video on free motion on our Regular sewing machines. thanks so much :)

  • @Xtgirl13 Thanks! I just used a bunch of different fabrics I had in my stash. They are not all from the same line or designer. I bought them all at Joann's Fabric store. There are a few Heidi Grace fabrics in there but the rest are just generic fabrics I had bought a few years ago. Sorry!

  • I love love love the fabric...can you tell me which line it is and where to purchase? Especially love the purples and pinks
