I only tested with aspen bedding, but I don't know what kind of substrate geckos work with, but if you don't have a thermostat I would use thick substrate because the area above the mat is very hot, especially running at full power.

@theeunloved1 deffinitley not under the tank. one of the options though is to put it on the side of the terrarium. this will keep your reptile from getting burnt.

If I use paper towels for my leopard gecko as a substrate, how think should it be if I want the under tank heat pad?

that was supposed to be installed on the outside of the tank not the inside
