Piura, Peru is a nice safe city to visit if traveling to or from Ecuador. Piura is about 3 hours from Tumbes, Peru. Lots of travelers visit the witches market in Piura, Peru. Not sure how the market got the witches name attached to it, but basically there are lots of natural medicines to be bought in the market. Picture bundles of herbs hanging from vendor stalls and assortment of boxed remedies for what ever ails you. I never saw any witches on brooms flying around or Harry Potter characters roaming around the market, but makes for an interesting visit.
The people were friendly and I felt welcome. There are some museums to visit and budget hotels to rest your head for the night. Piura can be difficult to get your orientation in and best to start at Plaza de Armas for your stay. Lots of hotels and restaurants are located in this area.
Some nice seafood restaurants to eat at and one fantastic coffee café to get your daily fix. Also the town of Paita, Peru is worth a day visit and is about 45 minutes away by bus.
