Yeah the Mordeth13 videos of him riding his bike in the mountains looks pretty fun. I could see how seeing similar scenery could get boring but still looks like a great road trip. I am surprised you where able to do it in 2 days. Did you camp in a campground or just wherever?
Mordeth13's mountain trips are mostly around the north of Taiwan, not really in the high mountain areas as far as I saw. If you want "real" mountain feeling, you need to go further to the center ot Taiwan, there are pass roads of up to 3300 meters, which are quite challenging by a 125cc scooter! ;)
In 2 days around Taiwan was more or less an experiment, if it is possible to do. We ended up riding 30 hours within 2 days, with a lot of short stops.
No, motorcycles (no matter how large their engine is) are not allowed on Taiwan's freeways. There are only two major freeways on the westside of the island, and some interconnections. But by scooter or any other bike you have to stay on normal roads, which actually is much more fun! The tour around the island always along the coast line was not that much fun, sometimes pretty boring, especially along the west coast. I really prefer the heart of Taiwan, the mountain roads!

We camped "wild" right next to the LiYu Lake.

Is it legal to go around the island on a scooter? Did you have any close calls?

Yes, it's legal, ...as long as you stay off the freeways! ;)
Close calls... ehm... not on this trip, at least I don't remember... maybe some stray dogs only.

Oh I thought the road around the island is a freeway. Cool, I will have to do that when I go to Taiwan this summer.
