Gary Oldman's performance of Beethoven is relatively close to how I think he truly was. Beethoven was a man who was a true genius, and because of is genius, became misanthropic towards what he viewed as a simple minded public. His deafness only made him hate society more, as did his numerous romantic problems. Beethoven was a very angry man, because at times it truly seemed like the whole world was against him, and he often hated the world back.
First off, Beethoven loathed criticism. His music was so modern a lot of people didn't get it, and when they didn't he was not at all shy about telling them they were idiots for not getting it. Beethoven was a genius, and he knew it, and was not shy about saying so.
Second, at this point in his life, Beethoven was profoundly deaf. I doubt he would have heard a canon going off, let alone be able to conduct conversation in this manner.
this movie is a dead-on take of Beethoven passion. Harris does a brilliant job portraying beethoven in the human sense, the director completely captures the excitement and passion involved. I consider this a masterpiece. Beautiful, and I feel changed because of watching it.
most definately, its not historically authentic, but story-wise its ok. hey, even Amadeus was pretty innaccurate at parts, but its the story that counts, or else its a documentary

A epic piece.
