Sorry, I'm a bitter singer whom hates implicitly being told to not sing due to not being a tenor.
Yeah, follow the advice. If you can transpose the thing into a lower bass range, you'll sound a lot better. (Bass voices are also incredibly sexy when they hit their lowest notes)

Have you considered transposing the song to better accommodate your low vocal range, so that you won't have to switch octaves?
