  • One of the most magnificent buildings in the world.

  • I lived and studied in York for four years and the minster is an amazing place. Sorry to be a pedant (and I don't know if it has been mentioned already), but the minster is not an abbey. York had several abbeys, the largest of which (St. Mary's) is now in ruins just to the west of the minster. It was huge as well (but not quite as big as the minster). What a marvellous site the two of them would have looked!

  • York Minster is the largest surviving medieval Cathedral in Britain. Old St. Paul's was larger, but it perished in London's great fire of 1666, and new St. Paul's is a smaller structure.

The vaults of York Minster are 98 ft. high... 2nd highest in Britain after Westminster Abbey (102 ft.).

York Minster has enormous quantities of medieval stained glass, reputedly half of all the medieval glass that survived in Britain.

  • wonderful *****

  • Went to the Minster from the great churches of Italy--and they are sublime-- and then Amiens and Chartres--and stopped off in York by accident on way to Scotland. I did not know about the Minster. Its structure matches anything anywhere. It is so proportioned and scaled so that while its verticality is less than others, its soaring uplifting effect equals the more renowned Gothics and its measured rational spaces are calming, affirmative, pleasing.

  • i love york

  • It is the Metropolitical Cathedral Church of St Peter, York. It is also arguably Britains' finest cathedral, but has a rival in Lincoln.

  • Steady on, chaps. This a great piece of architecture. We'll have no childish bickering here, thank you.

  • Thank you very much for uploading. I finally got to see the famous five sisters window.

  • i'm from southeast asia and i feel so blessed to have seen this magnificent edifice. setting eyes on it for the first time honestly took my breath away. it's an awesome experience that would last me a lifetime. thank you for uploading.
