the plague doctors mask is supposed to cover your mouth because it was very early form of gas mask (the beak was full of sacred herbs to "purify" the air in an area that the plague had affected) the doctors would also wear full length wax coton coats and thick leather gloves and would carry a special stick to hit sick people with to keep from being trampled by them
