The Flowers of War is a work of historical fiction set against the backdrop of the rape of Nanking, one of the most shameful periods in Japanese history.

Set in 1937 during the Japanese-Chinese war. As the invading Japanese army overruns Nanking, Chinese civilians seek refuge in a Western cathedral run by John Miller (Bale).

Miller takes shelter with a group of schoolgirls and 13 courtesans, all trying to escape the horror of the war.

  • I don't understand why anything involving China on youtube triggers a political discussion......I'm Chinese and I came here because I want to watch Zhang Yimou collaborate with Christian Bale, not to watch people attacking each other and their countries in the comment section thank you very much

  • this movie looks so good. its about the soldiers in china who raped innocent women and children during the war. the nanjinj massacre, i think it is referred to.

does anyone know when this is coming to DVD?

  • Why did the Chinese soldiers give up fighting against Japan and run and flock into the Safety Zone?

It is only natural that many civilian casualties were killed in battle.

  • THE TRUTH OF NANJING MASSACRE

    watch?v=ZTPgUbSvMNc

  • Sorry, strike that. Just found out it didn't make the final shortlist :(

Regardless of that, I still found it a brilliant film and I wish all the political sniping would stop on here. Call me an idealist, but I think rather than debate over past politics, we should remember the overrun of Nanking and those who died, and hopefully learn from history for what will probably be the first time.

  • I hope this does well at the Oscars, best of the foreign films I've seen so far :)

  • firstly i dont like the many name changes to this film,i think the original 13 flowers of nanjing was better, secondly .....carrying on the westerm tradition; the axis powers will be potrayed as aggressors and evil ,and bale will represent the yankee knight in shining armour, many people dont realize that it was a NAZI(AXIS) GERMAN!!! diplomat who provided refuge to the chinese from the japanese army, never seen a film abt him,nor the fact that he was the only one who documented the whole event!!!

  • @tomoaki66 and don't fucking compare the deaths of civilians from Nanking massacre to the deaths from the atomic bombs. If I am a civilian from the past I would rather die instantly in a gas chamber , an atomic , rather than suffering from barbaric torturing before death. Which would you prefer?

Anyway the later you japs apologize is going to be less realized by the world because nowadays no one really gives a shit to your little pathetic country anymore

  • @tomoaki66 I can't be bothered to translate EXCUSES , something about a general regretting of the infliction of inhumanity acts by the japanese soldiers to civilians? It is the responsibility of your so called JAPANESE EMPORER to officially apologize to the deaths , not even mentioning how the fuck your emporer still exists when the nazi parties disappeared.
