How to take ice hockey photos. Ice hockey is one of the hardest sports in my mind to try and photography. It was my first passion as a photographer and though many photographers tried to steer me clear of shooting it, I stuck with it and felt like I got as close to mastering it as possible.

There are a lot of factors you need to take into consideration when you are shooting ice hockey. You have to think about the basics like what should my ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture be but than you also have to think about what will make for a good image. That is where a lot of people get lost when it comes to sports photography. You see a lot of images of players standing around because action shots tend to be more difficult.

  • So you talk about focusing modes as far as single or continuous but what about the focusing points? What would you recommend? All points? Single point? Cluster?

  • @eurokid12 thats def a great question and prob should have put that in there. Come Wed I have another hockey discussion video going up where I discuss the points. I stay on 9 or 21 in my camera but mostly 9 point continuous.

  • Can we have a video tour of your new apartment? it looks really nice.

  • @dubstylzmw soon soon when my sofas come in.

  • @JaredPolin. Hey i've been an avid watcher for ages now. I'd just like to say that i really really like the way this channel is developing. Your enthusiasm and effort is really inspiring. Your mum would have been so proud.

  • @Dombowerphoto It sounds like you're on a basketball court. A loud screech.

  • wasn't too bad actually haha

  • Im shooting a hockey game in a few hours with a sony a390 and a tamron 70-300 5.6 ... IM SCREWED!

  • that synthetic ice even sounds like real ice when you skid to a stop. is it getting really rutted?

  • This is a ton of great info, but it would be waaaay sweeter if you managed to do this at a game.

  • LOL, i took photos in an ice skate hall today.

  • Tip: You have to understand and know 110% what's ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture is. watch videos about it as much as you can, play with the settings, see how it works, once you know how to combine these 3 elements together (ISO, Shutter Speed & Aperture) you done.

  • This is where you shine Jared, good job!

  • you are a great skater Jared! :o)
