This is my first time using the Super Jet filter to rack my hard cider into kegs. You don't de-gas cider, so I kept the carboy above the pump to minimize the initial foaming. Yes, the cider is green; it had a mold infection, so I decided to use it for training!

Lessons learned:

1. Filter in stages with more than one filter. I started with a single polishing pad and clogged it fast when I got close to the lees. Coarse filter first, and then re-filter to polish or sterile filter the product.

2. Have a bucket of clean water near by. I needed it to put the hoses into when moving between carboys.

3. Use clear water to thoroughly rinse the pump and hoses after sanitizing. You can get a visible acid-base reaction between the sanitizer and cider if the lines are not clean that will spoil your product.

It's a very nice pump-filter, and I'm happy with it.

  • i don't know anything about this type of cider, does it have any alcohol in it and if so about how much?

    very entertaining vids!

    keep them coming!

  • @psychodelicdragon Hard cider (what we call it in North America) is fermented apple juice and can have between 4 - 7% alcohol by volume. The strength of the alcohol is determined by the sugar content of the unfermented juice. I'm glad you enjoy the videos! My camera is busted, so I'm sort of in limbo for the time being...

  • The March 809 looks really nice; please share what you think of it when you get it. My only concern with this pump is degradation of the diaphram because of the acidic nature of cider. Only time will tell... The filter is great, and I'm sure I'll be using it a lot.

  • That is a really nice looking pump! Thanks for putting this up. I am about to make the jump to a March 809 pump, and am very much looking forward to the convenience.

  • Cool----an opportunity to make the first comment. Hope you had a Merry Christmas.
