On Viola d'Amore, violinist Hélène Plouffe explores the most beautiful works dedicated to this delightful instrument. Arias from Bach St. John's Passion accompany works by Telemann, Graupner (with bass chalumeau), Biber, Petzold and Milandre. In this video, she tells us more about that so special instrument.

Because of the title I thought it would be closer in sound to the viola, and therefore compared to a viola. Is it closer to violin?

I was reading the treatise on instrumentation by berlioz & strauss and berlioz described this instrument in great detail. I had never heard of it before then. I thought to myself "WOW that must sound marvelous!" I am not disappointed.
