Students Work on Mural Project: HOPES OF MIGRATION

Susana Mora Torres, grade 9, and Eduardo Dominguez, grade 10, participated in a summer project that included painting this mural in the city of Reading, PA. This project was organized by Pennsylvania Migrant Education in partnership with the Reading School District. The students worked under the direction of Mike Miller, who was the head artist of the project and works as an art teacher at Wyomissing High School. In order to qualify for the mural project, Susana and Eduardo had to successfully complete 45 hours of instruction that focused on reading, writing, and self-expression in English. All the students involved helped to choose the theme of migration for the mural and the title "Hopes of Migration." The faces in background are of students. The students worked on this project at least one hour per day for five weeks during their summer program. Activities ranged from research, to tracing and painting on canvas, and finally assisting with the actual installation of the mural on site. Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center provided the students with information on migratory birds in North and Central America. Each studemt then researched one of the migratory birds represented in the mural. The students learned that birds portrayed in the mural share migratory routes among the United States and their homelands of Mexico, Central and South America, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The culmination of this summer project is this 100-feet long by 13-feet high mural located at 600 Greenwich Street in Reading. Susana is one of the Berks County High School students pictured in the mural.
