These signals in Sale, Victoria were recently upgraded to LED and had arrows added. The intersection is treated as a T junction, despite another road on the left only metres away which has a Give Way sign. Unfortunately there is a problem where the lights for through traffic unnecessarily change to red when the arrow does - and then straight back to green. Also the amber is only 3 seconds in a 70km/h zone.

  • HA! Its not a program problem. Its to make sure the traffic coming toward you, that might be doing a U turn, don't see the lights go to red so that the right turn can run and think that the on coming is doing the same and go, causing a head on! So by stopping the traffic for a few seconds the U turns can go.

  • @johnandwegs Thanks for clearing that up. As I've seen it elsewhere, I did wonder. Surely it's better to put a NO U TURN sign up - and given the layout here, a U-turn is unlikely to ever be done from that approach. I don't think I'd ever want to try it there. You can see a car do a U-turn at the arrows, but that's probably common due to the service station on that side.

  • Aside from all that, given that traffic here has just entered a 70 zone from 80, I don't think a 3 second amber after 5 second green is such a good idea.

  • Hmmm. Interesting. I think that would throw quite a few people off when they got there.

  • @DounutCereal Actually, it threw me off the first time I saw it because the lights had just gone green, one car got over the line and they turned red again, I hit the brake, and then they went green. Generally lights don't change for a few seconds after a vehicle has passed over the detection loop in the road.
