Booting up an old NEC Multispeed

Watch me booting up an old NEC Multispeed Laptop from the late 80s.

Note: I also collect old consoles, so I might do a video about that some day.

you've gotta put linux on that baby :D Surely there must be a distro that runs off a floppy... problem is... can you find a floppy?...

I think the Puppy Linux distro is about 50MB... which is about 30 times the size of a floppy haha. There was a router/gateway/firewall distro that ran off a floppy... I forget the name though... How big is the HD and how much RAM does it have?

Haha, yeah thought about it. 50 megs is way over the top! I am not sure about the specs of the laptop since it was a gift and not my own machine. Once I am back from vacation I will look into it. If I see a light att the end of the tunnel, I'll make sure to give you a shoutout where it's due! Thanks for the input so far!!

2 years late in the post and i'm sure you've found a way to make it work but jsut in case you haven't, what your pretty error means is that it's trying to find a disc to boot into. most probably the floppy. i do not know if that system has an hdd in it or not, and if it does if the bios will allow boot or not. but most likely you will have to boot an os via floppy. what os? i do not know. i was too young back then and the only os i was familiar with and what i bet would work with that is DOS.

I used an NEC multispeed as my main machine up until about '96. I connected an external CGA display, and a front mounted track ball and wrist pad via the RS-232. I ran MS DOS 6.22, the system had a vram feature to make up for lack of hard drive. I would use MS Works 3.0 for dos (this version was also available for windows). I had the optional modem and frequented various telnet sites. I enjoyed playing Carmen San Deigo, MS flight sim and jee I think I would still mostly be entertained by it.
