One of my favorite folk songs out there. And they(by which I mean The Young Dubliners) covered it(as usual) brilliantly!

Quick recap..
Artist: The Young Dubliners
Song: I'll Tell Me Ma
Album: With all Due Respect

Hope ya love the song as much as I.

--Lyrics!--

I'll tell me ma when I go home
The boys won't leave the girls alone
They pull my hair & stole my comb
But that's all right till I get home

(chorus)
She is handsome, she is pretty
She is the belle of Dublin city
She is courting one, two, three
Please, won't you tell me, who is she?

Albert Mooney says he loves her
All the boys are fighting for her
Knock at the door and they ring the bell
Saying, "oh my true love, are you well?"
Out she comes, as white as snow
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
Old Jenny Murphy says she'll die
If she doesn't get the fellow with the roving eye

(Chorus)

Let the wind and the rain and the hail blow high
Snow come shovelin' from the sky
She is sweet as apple pie
She'll get 'er own lad by and by
When she gets a lad of her own
She won't tell her ma when she goes home
Let them all come as they will
It's Albert Mooney she loves still

(Chorus)

  • isn't it kinda meant to be saying ... she is the belle of belfast city?

  • @migled9 Well, they're called the Young DUBLINers, so it makes sense that they'd change it to Dublin city. Some bands have even said London city, I believe.

  • @BarbaricGoose yes, I suppose Dublin does make sense. London though is so ... non-Irish, how does that make any sense?

  • @migled9 I suppose it was covered by a non-Irish band.

    The Non-Dubliners, perhaps?

  • Thanks for posting and posting the lyrics just in the lyrics, you have one word mistaken

She won't tell her ma when she gets home

Is what you have but it's when she goes home not gets home

  • @pluserw Fixed. Thanks.

  • irish music like this is always awesome!! :D

  • @BarbaricGoose I grew up (decades ago) in Montreal, where we sang this as a skipping song (while skipping rope) & we sang it as "the girl from New York city". This sort of song is genuinely a "folk" tradition, so it changes to suit the folk who've made it their own. We were of Irish descent living in a Jewish neighborhood & the Jewish kids all had family in NYC.

  • love it!!

  • Great song! The Fighting Jamesons do a good version too. They played with Young Dubs in VA

  • I MUST learn this song on the ocarina! :D

  • First song I learned on the recorder in grade four!
