agreed you should wait till the engine stabilizes before connecting a load. As for the self excitation, you can use a simple drill and spin it to create a small voltage to "jump" the rotor magneto. Or you can take a small 6 volt lantern battery or 9volt and while disconnecting the regulator leads off the rotor hold it on there for 10 seconds to charge up the windings.

@xboxer1985 When the generator was started in this video it didn't have a load on it. The cords are plugged in but the devices are turned off. In the video at 2:32 you hear the generator dip when the load is applied.

My generator states that you should never have a load when starting a generator. In addition, you should always run the generator every three months or your carb will get gunked up... so I hear.

@scottp104 If you store fuel in your generator then yes you should run it every three months. I don't leave fuel in mine so I avoid carb problems. Also when the generator was started in this video it didn't have a load on it. The cord are plugged in but the devices are turned off.
