I started with the original clunky old one as used by Darth Vader (Dave Prowse alias The Green Cross Man) and moved on to the X5 which has a smoother action and is more refined although the extra exercises it offers over the original are pretty pointless. I've no plans to move onto the latest models as the X5 suits me just fine. My advice to a beginner would be to look in charity shops or eBay for X5 or original - can be had very cheap.

I am 13 and my dad got me one for Christmas. It's slightly improved but still a bull worker!

This is one of the best inventions, and the godfather of home workout equipment, in my opinion. It's low impact, efficient, effective, and timeless. Thanks for the vids!

Noticing how so many of us have got these from our dads

I have one of the older ones passed down from my dad, with the steel cables instead of nylon straps and no inner grips. Been using it for about a year now and I notice more muscle tone for sure. Very good for your fast-twitch muscle strength as well. The old ones are better in my opinion... mine is from the 70s I'd guess, and its still in perfect shape. They're not necessary since it's isometric and you can just push against anything immovable for the same effect... but easier for pulling.
