With all due respect to some of the many great artists of our time I hope that the rappers and other young folks who have eulogized Shirley Chisholm realize that she was a great friend to feminists, not only civil rights and black power leaders; some of the hatred towards women in today's pop culture and music, while more honest than it has been in previous music, is still not something Shirley would have endorsed. Venting is ok, but straight hate? Where's the line? Men and women both do it.
my mom knew Shirley Chisholm while working for NOW in NY in early 1970s (And late 60s?); she adored Shirley personally and politically. people said Chisholm was a person of great integrity thru and thru.
We have plenty like her. Whenever you see a successful, articulate, well-educated woman, who does not fit the stereotype but whose presence upsets right-wing society, you see a bit of her.
I wish I grew up learning about women like her and Steinem. Instead, I was taught that I was "just a troublemaker". Some validity in it I guess, but I had no older women to identify with like this. In future, I want to teach my babies, both male and female about women like this. It's the least I can do.
Books are you friend; books, and the various documentaries. Your babies will be blessed by you. And just maybe, the day will come when you will be among those who continue her legacy.
The LORD loves black people;HE demand they turn from their sins and trust in HIM.We are under the oppression of the white people because of our sins;our forefathers were rebuked of GOD and driven into slavery to a more evil and vile people than themselves, because of their sins. It's our responsibility and our fault.
